HGTV...the magazine!

Imagine this, it's Saturday afternoon, I'm at Costco and the place is a freaking zoo.  Probably not the best place to spend a Saturday afternoon right?  The one upside (for my kids and husband anyway) is there are a million and one samples just waiting to be had.  While trying to distract myself from inhaling useless calories, I headed to the magazine section and this bright and shiny new magazine jumped right out at me.  Believe it or not (even though I'm completely design obsessed) I don't have HGTV on my channels at home and I don't spend a ton of money every month on design magazines.  This cover was so pretty and loaded with colour and to die for patterns, that I just had to pick it up and take a peek.  Now, I know that colour makes a lot of people very nervous, especially us conservative Canadians, but these colours are ones that people can (and should!) easily incorporate into their homes and everyday lives.
Love the segment One Couch 5 Ways... if I had to choose, I'd say the blue is my favourite but I could be persuaded to choose any one of these combos.  They're all so bright and lively!  Coming from someone who is slightly obsessed by throw pillows, these are all beautiful, fresh ways to pull your sofa together.

If you want my opinion, there are too few bungalows in Vancouver.  Why do people feel the need to build monster homes these days?  I mean it's not like you have to advertise that you're wealthy.  You're building a house in Vancouver for goodness sake.  We've all pretty much guessed that you're not suffering!  Bring back the bungalow I say, nothing says "family home" and understated, good taste like a beautifully done bungalow with great curb appeal.

Here is HGTV's version of High Low.  I'm always looking for a way to capture the "look for less" for our clients.  Plus, they feature my favourite lamp of all time, the turquoise Paulette (left).

The Complete Overhaul of this house is perfectly done.  A citron yellow entrance is a total showstopper and the salmon coloured sofa paired with yellow pillows adds that perfect jolt of colour in an otherwise neutral room.

Would I buy this magazine again?  A definite thumbs up and if they keep up the good work,  I just might be convinced to get myself a subscription.  I'll keep you posted!

Russian Ballerinas

J Crew does it again!  I'm completely taken with these images from their fall campaign, but I'm also going to admit.... I have a love/hate thing with ballet.  I love the "look" of it but I hate the pressure that it means to be a ballerina.

I took classes as a little girl, but I was only ever really interested in the tutus and pointe shoes.  I was about 8 maybe 10 years old when the teacher announced to the class "Wouldn't it be great if Lindsay could lose two pounds before our recital?" Ahhh, excuse me?  Talk unhealthy yet defining moments in your life.

Somehow our recital wouldn't be as perfect as it could be because of me and my two measly pounds?!  I was hardly an overweight child (not that it matters).  No one should speak to a little girl that way, ever. Needless to say, that single moment pretty much ended my love for ballet.  What I wouldn't give to have a chat with that dance teacher today, especially now that I'm a mother of a little girl.  Words like that can be so damaging.  Luckily for me, I was completely embarrassed and humiliated but it never became a serious issue or a battle with an eating disorder.

Yet the sad thing is, even though it's almost thirty years later, I've never forgotten the remark but she'd probably never even remember it.  I still love the tutus and the pointe shoes but trying to be perfect has gotten way too old for this girl!

Wow, you'll have to excuse me, even I'm surprised by my little rant.  My initial intention was to share these pretty pictures and daydream about a new fall wardrobe from JCrew.  I guess it's true, writing a blog really can be a little bit therapeutic at times.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all our lovely readers.  I hope your weekend (and all your days in between) is filled with self acceptance!

Heavenly Hued Headboards

Hi! My name is Jenn and I'm a writer for Design Shuffle, which is a popular social media and networking site that chronicles the work of
top interior designers around the world. I write about home decor
everyday and love discovering new interior design trends, and it's
incredible blogs like Love Design Company that keep me inspired. I feel
so lucky to be guest posting here today about heavenly hued
headboards - thanks to Lindsay and Cristina for having me!
Headboards have moved away from the standard (and plain dull) wood
models of trends past and have evolved into colourful, snazzy, beautiful
centrepieces in bedroom designs. Curvy and ornate, or sleek and
decked out in bold colours, the choices are practically endless. These
eight heavenly hued headboards will give only good dreams.
The matching colours and motifs of these twin headboards is absolutely stunning for a modern twist on the traditional.

Perfect for a stately guest room, the duo of purple and gold headboards shown here looks great with both flowers as well as stripes.

An unusual colour for a headboard but nonetheless striking, this orange latticework fabric headboard is an easy starting point for an elegant bedroom design.

Oversized and in amazing shades, this heavenly hued headboard will be the object of everyone's desires.

The colour of this sleigh-like headboard is almost as interesting as its one-of-a-kind shape. The brass chandelier overhead also picks up on the rich yellows.

A lime green bird pattern on this heavenly hued headboard is lovely in lime, while the whites and soft blues somehow seem to complement the vibrant shade. Images ( 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 )

Sadly, it's that time of year again.

I spent Friday at Camp Jubilee (outside Deep Cove) with my son's elementary school.  Can we say FUN, insane, hilarious and ridiculous all in one day!?  By the end of our trip my face was hurting from laughing so hard.  Imagine, thirteen 5&6 year olds in a canoe paddled by ME (worst paddler ever) and one awesome teacher's aid!  One little boy got stung by a bee, one was crying for his mom and two kids ran away...but not one kid fell in the water!  For the most part the rain held off but my feet were soaked through from the canoe trip.  It really was an amazing day and one I won't forget for a long time.  I was kicking myself all day for not wearing my rubber boots.  Now that I'm looking at the forecast...I hate to break it to you but I think it's time to bring our Hunter boots back into regular wardrobe rotation.

A note to the guy wearing Hunters below... please don't, you look ridiculous.
